According to official rules, indoor archery takes place underneath a roof or similar structure. In general, indoor archery rounds are shot at shorter distances with three arrows per end. The number of ends in a round is determined by the round being shot.
Outdoor archery takes place where the archer is exposed to the elements, and it is not uncommon for shooting to take place in less than ideal conditions – rain, wind, cold and heat. In general, outdoor archery rounds are shot at longer distances with six arrows per end. The number of ends in a round is determined by the round being shot.
The three main styles of outdoor archery are target, clout and field.
